Moiré is a yarn-dyed velvet in 100-turn viscose made from a special yarn printed in tops. The yarn in tops is a bundle of combed fibers (in this case viscose) parallel to each other. Its advantages include: greater strength, less impurities and a softer feel. Each individual color of yarn used is obtained by a combination of 4 different shades, this makes for an elegant and refined “mosaic” effect. The loom used for weaving this velvet has almost twice as many reductions per cm as a normal velvet loom, which means that the number of threads per cm. is denser. This allows for a more defined pattern and makes the velvet very compact and suitable for all kinds of uses. After weaving, the velvet is, in textile jargon, “unraveled and selvedged,” in order to open up the fiber as much as possible to facilitate processing in the next steps. The velvet is treated with silicone and enzymatic agents, including anti-crease, to give it a soft hand and a lustrous appearance. Finally, the velvet is resined to allow for greater precision in stitching the upholstery.
